It's always fascinating how the emotional context to a particular sound can change based on what else happens to be going on in the frame. In the case of "Ungirthed", what seems to be the first track from a new project started by a member of spazzy electro-pop outfit Gobble Gobble, the transformed sound in question is the sort of pitched-down post-Burial ghost voices that in the past few years of music have often come to represent loss, loneliness, and maybe even death. (David Bevan wrote a feature about it here late last year.) But as heard here, next to a crazily addictive indie pop melody from singer Megan James, the ghosts sound liberated from purgatory and ready to join the party. The synths are warped and churning forward with an oblong gait as tinny electro drums tap out the beat, but it's James' voice at the center of this thing that keeps the ear coming back. In a time when so many lead vocals are buried and distant and dialed in from a memory, she sounds wonderfully present and clear and full of energy. "Ears ringing/ Teeth clicking/ Ears ringing/ Teeth clicking" goes the nifty little refrain, another affectionate tug from a song that seems to pull you closer with every bar.

Made In Heights recently released a new 11-track EP, Aporia: In These Streets, on Bandcamp. For those new to the duo, Heights is composed of Blue Scholars’ DJ/producer Sabzi and New York-based vocalist Kelsey Bulkin. They arrived on the internet scene last December with Winter Pigeons, an excellent collection of atmospheric electro-pop that vibed perfectly with a particularly brutal Northeast Winter.

Aporia is more of the same but with a lighter disposition to match its accompanying season. Sabzi’s deep reverb and metronomic precision are reminiscent of Roni Size’s seminal drum and bass crew Reprazent, but the beautiful synth textures and airy vocals courtesy of the poetic Bulkin places Heights firmly in electro-pop territory.

“Aporia” is a noun, defined as: “An irresolvable internal contradiction in a text, argument, or theory.” The contradiction here is the at-odds element of Sabzi’s booming electronic expanse and Bulkin’s slight, pretty vocals that often threaten to drift off the track and into their own realm. Variance is made complementary, however, and true aporia is thwarted in the musical space where the elements meet. See for yourself below.

Witch House: Die neue dunkle Welle
Psychedelischer Dub & zerhackter HipHop aus den Tiefen des Internets.

Ein Gespenst geht um in den Blogs: Witch House ist die Verquickung von clippenden Synthesizern, runtergepitchtem Südstaaten-Rap, okkulter Symbolik und psychedelischer Videokunst. Weitgehend unter dem Radar der Öffentlichkeit entsteht online ein vielförmiges Gesamtkunstwerk, dessen global verstreute Urheberschaft sich in medialer Skepsis und Zurückhaltung übt. Mit House hat das übrigens nichts zu tun.
Witch House begann irgendwann Ende letzten Jahres. Frühe Tracks von Salem geisterten durch das Netz, das in Berlin lebende Künstlerduo AIDS-3D pitchte Eurodance-Klassiker auf Chopped&Screwed-Geschwindigkeit, und Bedroom-Producer weltweit entdeckten die ASCII-Palette neu. Innerhalb weniger Monate schossen die MySpaces wie magische Pilze aus dem Boden, die Blogger reagierten aufgeschlossen bis verwirrt und die ersten Labels signten Künstler wie White Ring, Balam Acab und oOoOO (sprich: “Oh”).
Der Sound war kratzig und düster, über böse Midtempo-Stampfer und Dubs mit Handclaps rollten Planierraupen aus Synthesizern und Drones, über allem schwebten laszive Sängerinnen mit Hall en masse. Früh am Start waren Disaro Records aus Houston und Tri Angle aus Brooklyn, letztere haben mit Kompakt seit August dieses Jahres sogar einen deutschen Vertrieb. Mit Clan Destine zeigt das nächste Label Interesse an Witch House, unlängst bekannten sich auch HEALTH als Fans und nahmen einen Salem-Edit von “In Violet” in ihr Remix-Album “DISCO2″ auf. Der Hype in Deutschland steht in den Startlöchern, da melden sich schon die ersten Foren-Trolle und Style-Polizisten aus dem unteren Untergrund: “Witch House is dead!”, fauchen sie. So schnell kann es gehen.
Von Kenneth Anger zu Zombie Rave
Das Genre, nennen wir’s einfach mal so, hat sich in der kurzen Zwischenzeit bereits erfolgreich diversifiziert. Neben der Dub/HipHop-Variante namens Drag gibt es eine Edit-lastige mit geraden Beats (Zombie Rave) und noch mal eine ganz andere: psychedelische Slowdowns mit Hall- und Echo-Overkill, Ghost Drone der Name. Das Ganze als fließende Kategorien, selbstverständlich. Cosmotropia de Xam, Videokünstler und Mitglied des Ghost-Drone-Projekts Mater Suspiria Vision, erklärt: “Witch House ist das Muttergenre – Drag, Ghost Drone, Zombie Rave etc. die Töchter.”

Wer den Begriff erfunden hat, ist nicht verbürgt, genannt werden wahlweise Labelgründer Robert Disaro oder Todd Brooks vom New Yorker Kulturverein Pendu. Sicher ist nur, dass “Witch House” keine journalistische Fremdzuschreibung ist. Schon allein wegen der musikalischen Heterogenität muss es also etwas jenseits des Mediums geben, damit Witch House als ästhetische Kategorie funktioniert. Tatsächlich erinnern viele Artworks und Videos an fast vergessene B-Movies aus den Siebzigern: verstörende Arbeiten von Jean Rollin und Kenneth Anger, Okkult-Streifen mit einer guten Portion nacktem Fleisch, das Ganze geloopt, gespiegelt, mit Fehlfarben-Overlays und Interlaces. Abseits des Gegenständlichen beweisen viele Künstler eine Vorliebe für Dreiecke und Kreuze: Projektnamen wie GL▲SS †33†H oder PWIN ▲▲ TEAKS sind noch googlebar, spätestens bei †‡† und ///▲▲▲\\\ (sprich: “Void”, mittlerweile “Horse McGyver”) versagen Suchmaschinen wie Sprechwerkzeuge. Das dient nicht nur der sozialen Hermetik, die Zeichenketten passen auch nahtlos ins multimediale Konzeptkunstwerk: wieso Wörter schreiben, wenn man Bilder zeichnen kann?
Das Ritual dahinter
Wichtiger noch als die Verflüssigung der ohnehin schon pitschnassen Grenze zwischen Symbolen und Icons ist aber die Identifizierung von Worten mit Dingen, die Bezeichnung als Beschwörung. Jim Weigel alias Owleyes, Mitbetreiber von Disaro Records, ist ein klassischer Mystiker: “Viele Künstler wissen vielleicht nicht, weshalb sie sich zu dieser Bildsprache hingezogen fühlen, aber die Symbole sind tief in uns verwurzelt, sie sprechen zu uns. Die Ästhetik ist eigentlich sekundär, es geht in erster Linie um das Ritual dahinter. Kunst und Musik können ganz bewusst genutzt werden, um die Pforten zum Göttlichen in uns zu öffnen. Wir sind ein okkultes Netzwerk von Künstlern und Musikern, die hinter den Schleier blicken wollen.” Voraufklärerische Kernkonzepte in der hippen Parallelkultur? Das hieße mit Giordano Brunos Pantheismus und Eliphas Lévis okkulter Magie gegen die Diktatur der Eigentlichkeit anzukämpfen, oder präziser: sie mit ihren eigenen Waffen zu schlagen. Lady Gaga per Ghost-Drone-Edit eine Seele einzuhauchen, käsige Eurodance-Klassiker im Drag-Mix überhaupt wieder als Sound zu begreifen und das komplett abgestumpfte SAW-Publikum noch mal auf einer tiefenpsychologischen Ebene zu irritieren.
Dass Witch House die postmoderne Mystik nicht erfunden hat, weiß auch Owleyes: “Komplett neu und abgefahren ist das alles nicht, Genesis P. Orridge und Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth haben schon lange vorher Musik und Kunst als Magie und Ritual betrieben, davor waren es die Surrealisten. Uns geht es um die Kraft des Willens und darum, wieder einen Zugang zur wahren Magie zu finden, die in Kunst und Musik verborgen ist.”

Eichendorffs populärer Vierzeiler vom Lied, das in allen Dingen schlafe, sei damit vom Kopf auf die Füße gestellt: Hier schläft ein Ding in allen Liedern. Und wie bei Dalí sind das Dinge, die eigentlich nicht zusammengehören: Hexen, HipHop und David Lynch ebenso wie Leetspeak, MS Paint und Bands in Röhrenjeans. Auch kanonisch: das Kleine im Großen, das Teil im Ganzen. Owleyes: “Dies ist nur ein Mikrokosmos von dem, was überall um uns herum passiert. Die Menschen erwachen. Wir müssen überdenken, wie wir miteinander umgehen wollen – Alchemie, Evolution, die wahre Natur des Ichs erkennen, das sind die Schlüssel.”
Nur folgerichtig hat das Onlinephänomen dann auch den Weg in die echten Keller gefunden – erste einschlägige Konzerte und Partys laufen in New York, in London, in Berlin. Die Disaro-Familie hat gerade eine Labeltour durch Großbritannien hinter sich. Geld verdienen lässt sich damit freilich kaum, aber Owleyes sind ohnehin andere Dinge wichtiger: “Leute, die sich vorher nur von MySpace oder Facebook kannten, treffen sich zum ersten mal im echten Leben, und es ist wie ein Urknall. Manche sind ein bisschen verwirrt, aber die meisten fühlen sich sofort geborgen.”
Kontextmorphing
Es ist schon fast zu verlockend, die ganze Angelegenheit als eine Serie ironisch gebrochener Allgemeinplätze abzutun. Owleyes räumt ein: “Humor ist extrem wichtig. Wenn du die Dinge zu ernst nimmst, findest du nicht mehr aus dem Dunkel heraus.” Tatsächlich wirken viele Arbeiten und Statements programmatisch überdreht und eine Nummer zu absurd – auch das ist eine Frage des Blicks. Von eklektizistischem Klamauk distanziert sich z.B. Cosmotropia de Xam energisch: “Es geht hier nicht um Spaß. Es geht um Kontextmorphing und Bewusstseinsveränderung. Die Pforten der Wahrnehmung sind offen – wenn du es zulässt.” Womit Witch House zweifellos den postironischen Zugang zu einem Kosmos aufzeigt, in dem tatsächlich ein Zauberwort die Welt zum Singen bringt. Zu Eichendorffs Zeiten war die Inquisition übrigens schon lange vorbei, Giordano Bruno wurde seinerzeit noch der Ketzerei und Magie für schuldig befunden und starb auf dem Scheiterhaufen. Earlier this year Clams Casino released his “Instrumentals” mixtape and if you didn’t kop it then count yourself lucky as he has just released a digitally remastered version.

If you are wondering why the name Clams Casino rings a bell, but you can’t quite put a finger on why, it is because he is the man behind most of the beats on A$AP Rocky’s “LiveLoveA$AP” mixtape and has also produced for the likes of Mac Miller. Clams Casino’s beats have pretty much paved the way for the new breed of chilled hip hop (SME don’t think it has an official name yet, but its only a matter of time) so this tape is a must have.

Sehr sehr schön. Clams Casino, das derzeitige Wunderkind des Hip Hop Underground, schenkt uns seine “Instrumentals” in hochglanzpolierten 320 kbps. Das Album war bisher nur als Vinyl erhältlich und ausverkauft. Die verträumten Ambient-Sounds sind momentan bei US-Mainstream-Dickschiffen wie Soulja Boy und Lil B beliebt und wer diesen ganz eigenen Soundmix aus Dubstep, Hip Hop und Ambient in besinnlicher Feiertagsstimmung anhören möchte sollte dies augenblicklich tun, denn zumindest hier passen die Nebelschwaden ganz vorzüglich zu den schleppenden Beats.

Two or so years ago, a small clan of bedroom producers began retro-fitting the already retro mood of hazy electronica so that it fit their gloomy, Gummo goth aesthetic. They turned up the bass, slowed everything down and let the minor chords that Southern hip-hop sneak in ring back out, creating a sound that's been called witch house, drag and even led some to resurrect the post-punk term “darkwave.” White Ring, the New York duo of Bryan Kurkimilis and Kendra Malia, makes the scariest and most oppressive variation of this stuff, which also means they do it the best. Programmed drums skitter and then thud like a punch to the face; synthesizers corrupt everything with a gauzy on-opiates buzz; gun shots, door creaks and gnarly feedback wander in and out of the soundscape.

A split with similarly minded oOoOO came first; White Ring's contribution, “Roses” almost has a IDM-like bounce to it, but those simple pleasures are undermined by a not-quite-right sense of nervous tension, thanks to Malia's erratic vocals. The aptly titled single “Suffocation” even nods to the arpeggiated pop-rap of Lil Wayne's “Lollipop,” if Kim Gordon (in “Eliminator Jr.” mode) did the vocals. Their EP, Black Earth That Made Me, features “IxC999,” with Malia chanting, “My faith is gone”—or maybe “My face is gone?” Go with whatever one makes you feel weirder.

Live, White Ring overwhelm with creeping dread. As a strobe light flickers and bass threatens to blast eardrums into oblivion, Kurkimilis leans heavily on his synth. Malia wails like a horror-movie murder victim. This is music made for staring straight ahead, wild-eyed in the club, completely lost in the broken beauty of it all. —Brandon Soderberg

This album is a part of a trilogy which includes Thursday, released on 18 August 2011, and Echoes of Silence, released on 21 December 2011.^[3] The song "High for This" was featured in the promo for the final season of the HBO show Entourage On June 16, 2011, House of Balloons was named as a longlisted nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.^[4] On July 6, the album was named as one of ten shortlisted nominees but eventually lost to Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.^[5] On December 21, 2011 at 11:07 p.m. EST Tesfaye released his highly anticipated third album Echoes of Silence. The Weeknd's site crashed shortly after due to the large number of downloads. The Weeknd quickly provided a Hulkshare link to keep the album available while the official site was down.

Since hitting the scene, The Weeknd has received praise from a number of musical publications, including those of MTV, BET, Rolling Stone, XXL, The Source and 2DopeBoyz, who have all dubbed him the "Songbird of his Generation", as well as the "best musical talent since Michael Jackson" (John Norris, MTV).
